Oh Happy Day!

Updated: Sep 7, 2020

Simple Pleasures

The question I posed for the month of May was,"how do I want to be with change." I had said that I intended to journal every day and focus on gratitude in this time of change. What I learned from this focus was, that I need a lot less than I thought I did to be happy. I took some time and listed all the things that I would like to experience in a day for it to be a great day. Everything that I listed were things that I can do, even in this new COVID world. I found that the days I did most of the things on my list, were great days because I felt like I achieved what I wanted to do. I discovered that what I want most in a day is to feel productive, to have fun, to connect with people I care about and to take care of my physical and mental well-being. If I do something in all of these areas each day, then I feel fulfilled.

Something else that I noticed from my journaling is that I like progress. So in this time of trying to define the "new normal," I feel encouraged by any sign of progress. It's been nice now that the world is opening up a little bit. It has made a big difference for me to be able to go for walks with friends again or to enjoy social distance socializing outdoors. I appreciate these things so much more than I ever did before.

I am also enjoying making progress with my writing and some other personal projects. Because so much of my regular routine came to a dramatic halt when things started shutting down in March, I have had much more time to focus on some things that I wanted to do, but was usually too busy for. Now that things are opening up again, I want to be conscious of how I use my time. I don't want to lose my focus on these projects that are bringing me joy even when the demands on my time increase again.

So I guess my biggest take away from this reflection on how I want to be with change is that I want to be open to change and focus on the positive aspects of whatever the change is. And I also want to honour the values that are most important to me. If I do the things that are most essential to me each day, I can find fulfillment.

How about you? What are your thoughts on change? How did you decide you would like to be with change. What are you experiencing now with the way your world is?
