Go Ahead - Make My Day!

What can you do to make someone happy?

Last week's question was "What is ONE Thing you can do to keep your summer spirit?" I said I was going to sit on my deck every day and also do a hike. I did sit on my deck 4 times last week. I missed a few days because of weather or timing. But one thing I was really happy about was that I invited my husband to join me one evening. He accepted and brought a glass of wine for each of us onto the deck off our upstairs bedroom. I was delighted because it was me who insisted that we build that deck. When we were designing our home, I had a vision of us sitting on that deck outside our bedroom enjoying a glass of wine and each other's company. In the 15 years we have lived in our house, we have rarely sat on that deck together. So having that moment last week was a highlight for me. It was so gratifying to live the exact vision I had in mind.

I was also happy that I did the other thing that I committed to, which was to go on a hike with my kids. It turned out to be a beautiful hike, with gorgeous views. It was, however, a crazy steep incline at the beginning and I was humbled as my kids easily scrambled to the top while I needed to stop for breaks to "see the view." Also, the end of the hike felt very long, which made me wonder if we would ever make it back to civilization. Overall, I was so happy with the challenges I set and met last week. I hope you had a great experience with your ONE Thing from last week as well.

This weeks's question is, "What is ONE Thing you can do this week to make someone else's day?" This question is inspired by the experience my husband and I had last night when we went out to dinner to celebrate our anniversary. We went to a nice restaurant near where we live and were a little surprised at how empty the restaurant was. Our server was a lovely, friendly, young woman. Since she didn't have many clients to serve, she spent a lot of time chatting with us. She definitely went the extra mile to make our anniversary dinner a delight.

So I would love to pay that experience forward and go the extra mile to make someone else's day. I don't know what that will be yet. I am going to be spontaneous and see what opportunity presents itself. Some ideas for all of us could include buying someone else's coffee when you're at a coffee shop. This is an idea that I have heard many people say they practice regularly and I think it is great. It could also be something like helping a mom with young children if you see her struggling in the store. Or picking up a special treat for your family or a friend. It could be helping a friend with a project. You might even send a silent blessing to someone you care about. It could simply be sharing a smile with a stranger and brightening their day. This week, be on the lookout for a way to make someone else feel special. The beauty of this is that you will feel as good as the person you are trying to help.

As always, I would love to hear from you on what you will do this week to make someone's day. Please share what you are planning to do in the comments below, on Facebook or in our Weekly ONE Thing Facebook Group! We might get good ideas from each other.
